That area around a large front yard tree is one of the trickiest spots to deal with. Grass struggles to grow under the canopy, mowing around the roots is a pain, and it just ends up looking patchy and neglected no matter what you do. A well-built rock bed is one of the cleanest solutions out there.

Here's what we were working with - a large shade tree sitting right in the front yard, open and visible from the street. We designed a wide, oval-shaped bed around it using tan decorative gravel, clean steel edging to hold the border, and a mix of accent boulders and ornamental plants spread throughout. The result is a bed that looks intentional, not just like someone threw rocks around a tree.

The edging is one of those details that really makes or breaks this kind of installation. Without a solid border, gravel migrates onto the lawn and the whole thing starts to look sloppy within a season. We use edging that locks the bed in place and gives it that sharp, finished line you can see from the curb.

Rock and gravel installations like this one are built to last. No watering, no mowing around the roots, no re-mulching every year. The accent boulders add some natural weight and texture so it doesn't look flat or boring. Once it's in, it basically takes care of itself - which is exactly the point.

Good landscape design doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it's just about identifying the spots that give you the most headaches and replacing them with something that looks great and stays that way. That's what we aim for on every job.
