Yard Grading and Topsoil Prep to Fix Drainage Problems

Standing water after a rain isn't just annoying - it's a sign your yard's grade is working against you. Water that pools near your home can cause real damage over time. Foundation issues, soggy spots that never dry out, mud tracked everywhere. It's a problem worth fixing the right way.

Here's what we were working with: areas around the home and along the side yard where the slope wasn't moving water away like it should. The fix starts below the surface. We reworked the grade and brought in topsoil to build the right slope so water sheds away from the structure and drains properly instead of sitting.

What a lot of people don't realize is that grading isn't just about moving dirt around. You have to think about where the water is coming from, where you want it to go, and how the whole yard connects. The side yard corridor, the front, the back near the patio - it all ties together. Get one section wrong and you're just pushing the problem somewhere else.

Once the grade is dialed in and the topsoil is spread and smoothed out, the yard is set up for the next step - whether that's seeding or sod installation. That prep work is what determines how well grass establishes and how the lawn holds up long-term. Skip it, and you're just covering up a problem that'll come back.
